The use of decking is one of the most a popular ways to give a garden a make-over. Wood decking adds a striking finishing touch to a garden and is not only aesthetically appealing, but is practical too as it has a number of uses. You can use garden decking in much the same way as a patio, to provide outside seating and dining areas. Timber decking can be used as a children’s play zone, for entertaining friends on, or simply as a beautiful relaxation area. You can even build decking to incorporate a hot tub! Nelson Potter sell a range of garden decking products including softwood decking, decorative deck posts, hand rails, base rails, vertical spindle panels and pin grooved spindles to create attractive decking areas in your garden.

Wood decking can be built in most places in the garden, in sunny or shady areas and it can also be built on different levels. You are not just restricted to constructing decks on level areas as they can be added to sloping parts of the garden too. Garden decking can be used in many different ways and can even be combined with patio paving to provide an alternative feature.

You can choose from square or rectangular shaped dfecks, ground decks, raised decks, multi-level decking and decking with the option of balustrading to form a safety barrier. Alternatively use your decking to create a wonderful eye-catching garden feature with a beautiful pergola and climbing plants. Use our pergola components to make stunning walkways or archways that add to the aesthetics of your garden.

The first thing to consider when building a deck area is the framework of the decking. Will your deck be at ground level or elevated? Think about the load bearing per square metre and joist centres. To create the frame, there are several options. These include 75 mm x 50 mm sawn timber, 100 mm x 50 mm sawn timber, 125 mm x 50 mm sawn timber and 150 mm x 50 mm sawn timber, which are all pressure treated. Nelson Potter stock a range of sizes of sawn material suitable for all needs and we are happy to advise you on your requirements.

We would encourage customers to lay a weed membrane down before laying the frame. This just helps to prevent weed appearing through the decking. We sell softwood decking, deck posts, deck panels, galvanised nails, yellow passivated screws and deck screws, hand rail, base rail and pin grooved spindles. Generally pin grooved spindles/deck panels are fitted between the hand rail and the base rail and these are then secured to the deck posts to create a barrier.

Most people with limited carpentry skills can build simple decking, but more advanced decking would probably require greater carpentry skills, or you may need the services of an expert to help you.

Garden decking, like all timbers, can expand and contract depending on the weather conditions, it is best to buy your decking components at least a week before you build your decks, to ensure that your boards can adapt to the atmosphere. They should be stored on straight ground on timber supports and close to where the decking will be built. Ideally they should be stored covered.

Our softwood decking components have been pre-treated to guard against insect damage and rot. They can be built on straight or sloping ground and can either be connected to the house, or placed freestanding elsewhere in the garden. Our decking components have been rebated with a grooved profile.

Different Types of Decking

Ground Decks
Ground decks are usually built on flat ground or can be laid over existing patio areas. You can place ground decks next to a house, or summerhouse or at the bottom of a garden. Add hand rails, potted plants and even a water feature to create a wonderful area of relaxation. They also look fantastic with the addition of a hand rail or a pergola and you can incorporate different levels. Ground decks look stunning and will beautify any garden.

Raised Decks
Raised decks, otherwise known as high decks, offer the perfect solution for gardens with unusual or sloping grounds. They have even been known to be used as bridges or balconies. Raised decks often have steps up to them and they can be built on several different levels. Some even have storage areas beneath. They look great with the addition of a pergola and rails can also be installed for safety reasons. They can instantly transform a garden into a gorgeous, relaxing haven.
