Timber gates have been used for centuries the world over. They can be used provide access to gardens, parks, farmland, driveways and shared alleyways. Found in the countryside, towns or cities, wooden gates can either be flanked by hedgerow, teamed with wire fencing (in the countryside) or matched with timber fencing to provide a more uniformed look to a private garden.

Field Gates
Field gates provide access to homes or paddocks. As the quality we offer here at Nelson Potter are fully planed and decorative, most of our field gates are used to provide access to driveways. However, they can also be used for agricultural purposes. They are available with left or right hanging options.

We sell field gates made from kiln dried high quality redwood timber which has been pressure treated. Our 1.09 m high Field Gates come in a variety of widths including 0.915m, 1.218 m, 1.525 m, 1.828 m, 2.132 m, 2.438 m, 2.743 m, 3.05 m, 3.351 m, 3.66 m, 3.962 m and 4.261 m. High entrance Gates
High entrance gates are a very traditional style of timber gate which is typically used to provide access to a front garden or driveway of a business or private house. We have a selection of high entrance gates made from kiln dried high quality timber which has been pressure treated. They are available with left or right hanging options.

Our 1.03 m high Entrance Gates come in the following widths 0.915 m, 1.218 m, 1.525 m, 1.828 m, 2.132 m, 2.438 m, 2.743 m, 3.05 m, 3.351 m and 3.66 m. We also offer a made-to-measure service on our high entrance gates to help you meet your exact requirements.

Pedestrian Gates
Pedestrian gates are so called because they are only designed for people to access through. They are smaller width gates so they are typically used for domestic purposes, to provide access to the front or back garden or to separate sections of a large garden. They can be teamed with matching fence panels to provide a more co-ordinated look. A timber pedestrian gate can also be used at the end of a walk-through arch in a garden to provide a decorative effect or it can serve as a side gate, particularly if you have a cottage or terraced house with a shared alley leading to the back.

We sell Frame, Ledge and Braced Weather Board Pedestrian Gates with weather capping included. These hard-wearing gates are available left or right hanging. They come in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h); 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) x 1.8 m (h).

Our Suffolk Frame, Ledge and Braced Weather Board Pedestrian Gate is clad in 100 mm weatherboard.  It comes in size 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h).

Our Ledge and Brace Weather Board pedestrian gate is available left or right hanging in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) and 1.8 m (h). T & G Matching Gates
T & G stands for Tongue and Groove, which is an interlocking timber board. T& G matching gates have a V joint, which makes it slightly more decorative than the standard tongue and groove. These are smaller width gates so they are typically used on domestic premises as a back gate to the garden, as an opening to a side entrance and to separate areas of a large garden.

We sell heavy duty and standard T& G matching gates with either a straight or convex frame. Weather capping is included. They are available left or right hanging, in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) x 1.8 m (h). Our standard T & G matching gates are clad in a 110 mm x 12 mm thick T& G and our heavy duty gates are clad in 110 mm x 19 mm thick T&G.

T & G Flooring Gates
Our T&G Flooring gates include the Frame, Ledge and Brace T & G Flooring Gate and the Suffolk Frame, Ledge and Brace T & G Flooring Gate. The Suffolk frame ledged and braced T&G gate is also a T&G Matching gate.
T & G stands for tongue and groove, which is an interlocking timber board. A ledge is a horizontal bar on a gate and the brace is a section of timber which runs from the low side near the hinge to the opposite corner, to provide added strength to the gate.

These are smaller width gates, so they are usually seen on domestic premises to serve as a back gate to the garden. They also can provide shared side entrance access to get to the back of a property, which is typically seen in some terrace houses or cottages. T& G Flooring gates can also be used to separate sections of a large garden.

Our Frame Ledge and Brace T&G Flooring gates are clad in 135 mm x 19 mm thick T&G and weather capping is included. They are available left or right hanging in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.28 m (w) and 1.28 m (h).

Country Gates and Cottage Gates
The difference between a country gate and a cottage gate is only in the appearance of the gate. The cottage gate has a reeded effect board and each picket has a round top. The country gate has a sawn, chunky board. A ledge is a horizontal bar on the gate and a brace is a section of timber which runs from the low side near the hinge, to the opposite corner to make the gate stronger.

These are smaller width gates which are generally used on domestic premises. They provide access to a back garden, side access and they can be used to section off parts of a large garden. Our country and cottage gates have been ACQ pressure treated and are available with left or right hanging options.

The Ledge and Braced Country Gate and the Ledge and Braced Cottage Gates are available in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) x 1.8 m (h). The country gate i clad in 100 mm x 22 mm boards and the cottage gate is clad in pin grooved round top pickets and backed onto a 100 mm x 38 mm rail.

Fence Panel Gates
The idea of the fence panel gate is that it makes the gate almost invisible with the fencing. It ensures the gate blends in the fence to give the overall look one of continuity. Fence panel gates are smaller width gates so they are ideal for access to rear gardens.

They also work well as side entrance gates to provide an entrance to a shared access for cottages or terraced houses and can be used to section off unsightly areas such as bins or compost heaps. Fence panel gates can also be used to separate areas of a large garden to create smaller, sections which can be used as a vegetable patch, herb garden, courtyard or relaxation area.

Our fence panel gates consist of Waney Edge boards encased into a frame and have been ACQ Brown Pressure treated. It is available in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) and 1.8 m (h).

Picket Gates
Picket gates work well as an entrance to front or back gardens and can also be used to separate different sections of a garden, such as herb gardens or play areas. Here at Nelson Potter, we also sell many of these picket gates for rabbit proof fencing, allotments and vegetable patches.

Our picket gates are ACQ pressure treated and we offer the option of left and right hand opening. They are also available with a round or pointed top.

The Picket Gate is ledge and braced and backed onto a 32 mm rail. You can choose from the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 0.9 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.2 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.8 m (h),  1.218 m (w) x 0.9 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.2 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) and 1.8 m (h).

The Frame Ledge and Braced Picket Gates have a 10 mm x 38 mm half-lapped frame and are available in the following sizes: 0.915 m (w) x 0.9 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.2 m (h), 0.915 m (w) x 1.5 m (h), 0.195 m (w) x 1.8 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 0.9 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.2 m (h), 1.218 m (w) x 1.5 m (h) and 1.218 m (w) x 1.8 m (h).
