Garden decking has enjoyed an upsurge in popularity in recent years, thanks in part to TV makeover programmes, particularly Ground Force. Here Nelson Potter, who offer timber decking – and associated products – to customers in Woodbridge, Ipswich and across Suffolk, take a closer look at the advantages offered by this garden feature.
Itcan be used in a number of ways, from a simple pathway up and down the garden to an expansive patio for eating, entertaining and relaxing (see picture above). It can also be used as the platform for other garden features, from a simple set of potted plants to a play area or even as the base for a hot tub.
Decking can look striking and can brighten up the most uninspiring of gardens. The warmth and character of the wood, whatever type it is, can create an inviting and visually appealing outdoor space to complement a wide range of architectural styles and garden designs.
On the flip side, it can also cover up unappealing parts of the garden, which you may not be able to do much with, because they are often waterlogged, or too shady, to grow plants in. It can also cover up unwanted slopes and undulations.
Timber decking is a more sustainable product than some of the alternatives (for example, composite products), particularly if the wood has been responsibly and locally sourced. With the appropriate treatments, it can last a long time as well. It is also an energy-efficient material.
As a natural insulator, it will keep the deck warm in cooler months, and cooler in the summer, which is particularly useful if you want to use it for eating outdoors.
Timber decking can create a pathway up to the furthest parts of your garden, and it is an easy alternative to paving slabs or gravel paths. This is particularly true in winter if you don’t fancy walking on snow, ice, or any waterlogged parts of the garden.
It can also act as a ‘dividing line’ separating out different parts of the garden, such as play areas, wild zones, and normal planting areas. More generally, it makes the garden more ‘useable’ all the year round, particularly if you use it as an outdoor patio.
With timber decking, there are plenty of financial advantages as well. This isn’t just because decking can work out cheaper than paving slabs, concrete or stone (with these you may also have to think about a sub-base as well).
Decking can also make your garden that much more attractive – so if you do ever decide to sell up and move, you should get a higher price for it. It’s what estate agents call ‘kerb appeal’ – even if your decking is in the back garden.
