Five Key Advantages of Wooden Garden Furniture

Garden furniture Felixstowe – from Nelson Potter

Although it can be tempting to invest in cheaper plastic alternatives, there really is no substitute for buying high-quality wooden products when it comes to improving your garden. Here Nelson Potter, who supply garden furniture to customers in Felixstowe, Woodbridge and across Suffolk, explain why.

  1. It Looks Natural

Whether you are talking about arches and arbours, picnic tables, benches and chairs, or more functional items such as planters – all of which we can supply at Nelson Potter – garden furniture looks that much more natural if it is made of wood.

The timber brings a natural warmth and beauty to outdoor spaces, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Its natural textures and colours can complement any garden design, whether it’s rustic, formal or contemporary - and you can’t always say that about plastic or metal furniture.

  1. It’s Sustainable

Timber is a renewable resource when it comes from sustainably managed forests, making it an environmentally friendly option. Even when it comes to the end of its life as a piece of furniture, the timber can usually be recycled – or upcycled if you can think of an ingenious way to reuse or repurpose it.

Even if you can’t find an alternative use for it, wood (unlike plastic or metal) will eventually decompose naturally, returning nutrients to the soil and minimising long-term waste.

  1. It’s Durable

Hardwoods and pressure-treated softwood, which is what we use in our products, offers excellent protection against rot and insect damage. With proper care – that is, keeping it clean and as dry as possible, and restaining or revarnishing it on a regular basis – quality timber furniture can last for decades. In contrast, metal furniture may be subject to rust and corrosion if left out in the rain for too long.

In many cases, it should also be possible to replace individual sections of timber without any adverse effects on the furniture’s overall appearance.

  1. It’s Customisable

As well as varnishing your timber furniture (which is available in a variety of colours/finishes) you can also paint it. You can really let your imagination run wild by painting certain planks one colour, and others in a different shade.

You may also be able to combine two separate items of timber furniture. For instance, why not try having a wooden seat or bench with an arch or arbour, as in the picture above left?

  1. It’s Secure

While some people may complain about the weight of timber furniture compared to plastic, this means that it won’t blow away so easily if there are any high winds. It also means that it is less likely to be stolen by opportunist thieves who should be discouraged by the amount of effort involved.
