Nine Ways to Use Timber Decking

Timber decking is an attractive, rustic garden feature that helps formulate a picture perfect transition between the house and garden, especially if you have sliding patio doors. Although many people use wooden decking in the same way as a patio – for al fresco dining – only your imagination is the limit. This stunning garden feature can be used in many different ways from incorporating a hot tub, to creating relaxation areas, bridges, raised pathways or viewing platforms.

Nelson Potter timber merchants is a family run business, established more than 40 years ago. We supply high quality timber and wooden garden products including fencing, gates, trellising, garden furniture, log cabins, summer houses, sheds, garages and timber decking to customers in Suffolk and Essex. This article looks at nine different ways to use decking to create an imaginative outdoor space.

Al Fresco Dining Area – This is the most common use for decking and if it is installed close to the house (outside sliding doors) it can almost be used as an extension of your home, creating an outdoor ‘room’ with an attractive wooden garden table set or a picnic table with umbrella for shading. If your garden is a suntrap, you might want to think about creating a shaded area in this space with a beautiful pagoda and climbing plants. Shaded areas help make al fresco dining a more comfortable experience on the hottest days of the year!

Space for a Hot Tub – A wooden decked area can be used to accommodate a hot tub, so you can enjoy a relaxing bubble all year round. Although square or rectangular decks are the most popular choices, if you have a round hot tub you can install eye catching circular decking to create uniformity and balance. If you garden is overlooked, a wooden pagoda or decorative panelling will make this space more secluded.

Relaxation Zone – Another way to beautify a contemporary garden is to create a spacious relaxation area with comfy seating and a wooden table for drinks and snacks. If you are using your decking for entertaining, a patio heater will keep guests warm for longer – in the evenings or on cooler days. Concealed outdoor lighting looks striking and transforms this space into a luxurious, state-of-the-art outdoor living area.

Viewing Platform – If you are lucky enough to have a pond or stream at the bottom of your garden, a wooden deck can create a tranquil space for fishing, or just for quiet contemplation. Put a couple of wooden chairs out to sit and read, or simply to admire your natural surroundings.

Play Area – If you have children, decking can be used to create an outdoor play area. Raised areas can be made safe with wooden panelling, so your children can scoot about in their toy cars safely. Or lay a blanket, mat or ground sheet down with a few cushions for cosy seating .

Wooden Bridge – If you have an ornamental pond or small lake in your garden, decking can be used to create a pretty bridge with a small seated area. Timber decking is extremely durable and will blend beautifully with your outdoor space.

Sloping Gardens – Wooden decking can be installed on tiered or sloping gardens to add harmony and consistency to your outdoor space. Wooden steps and levels will transform uneven gardens into a picturesque, functioning space.

Timber Pathways – Decks can be used to create pretty pathways to add charm and versatility to your garden. All our decking is treated in advance of sale to prevent insect damage and rot; however, it will need maintenance over time. Checking whether nails are loose and coating your decking with all-weather treatment will ensure that it looks smarter and lasts longer.
Poolside Decking – Decking gives your pool the attention to detail it deserves and adds to the charm of this leisure area. It is a popular choice to have around the pool, but again it needs maintenance to keep it in tip top shape.
