Garden Design – Six Ways to Improve Your Garden This Year

Now is a great time to think about improving your garden so you can enjoy it to its full potential over the summer months. Making changes to your garden with either decking, garden fencing, garden gates, summer houses and sleepers (for raised flower beds or vegetable patches) will transform your outdoor space and create the perfect garden for use not only in the summer, but all year round.

Nelson Potter is celebrating 40 years in the trade this year and we stock a wide range of fence panels, fence posts, sleepers, decking products, timber, garden gates, driveway gates, summer houses, patio furniture and much more. Here are some of the ways you can perk up your garden so you and your family can make the most of your outside space this year.

Improve Your Garden Fencing

Fencing is one of the first things we notice when we look at the exterior of a property. A broken fence panel looks shabby and makes the whole garden look unkempt. One way to improve a property is by constructing attractive wooden fencing which makes a house look neater from the outside and if you are thinking of selling your home it can actually help raise the value of your property.  This is because the right type of fencing not only looks good but it can also be used to screen off an unpleasant view.

Building garden fencing not only defines boundaries, but it also provides a certain degree of privacy. The higher the fencing, the more private your garden will be. It is lovely to be able to sunbathe on the lawn, or enjoy an al fresco meal without fear of being looked on by the neighbours or passers by. Remember that the higher the fence (up to six foot is allowed), the more private your garden will be.

Nelson Potter sell a range of fencing products including heavy duty fencing and decorative fencing which makes a delightful garden feature. We also sell trellising to grow climbing plants and have picket fencing, which does not provide much privacy but is an appealing way to divide areas of the garden and keep pets in. In addition, we sell all the additional fencing products you need such as garden posts, gates, nails, screws and bolts.

Add Decking to Create a Seating Area

Decking is a smart way to improve your garden ready for entertaining guests during the summer months. It offers the perfect way to extend your living space to the outdoors. Add a table and chairs and you have a dedicated seating area for dining al-fresco or BBQs! You can also use your decking space as a place for the children to do painting and craftwork on.

Decking comes in many different forms: you can have ground, raised or multi-level decking or free-standing decking where you have a designated spot away from the house for reading or sunbathing. Either way decking is an attractive way to improve your garden and makes the outside space look neat and defined. It looks fantastic in your garden and is a great way to improve the value of your home.

Nelson Potter sell everything you need to build your perfect decking. We provide a complete range of timber board decking and timber decking products including softwood decking, decorative fence posts, hand rails, base rails, vertical spindle panels and pin-grooved spindles.

Install a Summer House or Log Cabin

Summer houses are a superb way to expand your living accommodation! They provide an attractive, outdoor escape and a place to sit and listen to the sounds of nature. They have a host of uses including entertaining, dining and a place to relax and enjoy quiet time with good book.

Log cabins are another great way to improve your garden and have an aesthetically pleasing, rustic appeal. They are available in many different sizes, from one room, right the way through to five rooms with a loft room and a decked terrace. Use your log cabin as an office, hobbies room, games room, gym, children’s playroom or guest accommodation.  You can have log cabins with shower, toilet facilities and under-floor heating to give you valuable extra living space all-year round. They are perfect for large families and will help raise the price of your home when you come to sell.

Nelson Potter have a full range of log cabins for sale and in addition to our log cabin kits also provide optional extras such as under-floor heating and guttering. If you don’t feel you can erect the log cabin yourself we can install it for you, just contact us for a quote.

We also sell summer houses, workshops, garages and wooden sheds. Many of these also have optional extras if required such as heavy duty framing, extra windows, fixed window converted to opener, shaped barge boards, antique style handles and a 3-lever lock.

Invest in New Garden Furniture

Investing in new garden furniture is a quick and easy way to spruce up your garden and make it look good all year round.  Wooden garden furniture gives you valuable outdoor dining space where you can catch up with friends on mild evenings or on sunny weekends. A table and chairs on the patio, decking area, or out on the lawn looks attractive and you will want to go straight outside when the sun shines!

The most common form of garden furniture is the table and chairs set, which  come in a variety of sizes including four to eight-seater versions. You can buy seat pads separately to provide extra comfort and also umbrellas to keep you, your family and guests out of the sun. Nelson Potter sell a wide range of attractive patio furniture either in kit form or ready assembled including 2-seater benches, 3-seater benches, double seating, rectangular table sets, round table sets, tree seating, armed chairs and picnic tables.

Create Raised Vegetable Beds Out of Sleepers

Growing your own vegetables is a rising trend as more people want the pleasure in cultivating their own, organic produce. There is something completely satisfying about growing your own vegetables from a seed and serving them up on a plate for the whole family to enjoy. People up and down the country are growing vegetables and herbs from window boxes, roof top terraces and gardens. Eating fresh vegetables, free from pesticides is healthy, nutritious and tastes great too. If you have your own garden, one way to create a clearly defined area for vegetable growing is by using wooden garden sleepers.

These are great for the job, as they are extremely durable and tough enough to bear weight of the soil. To create, first decide what height you want your raised beds to be: ankle height, knee height or higher. Whichever one you choose, wooden garden sleepers will create an attractive, rustic effect and work well with any garden.

To prolong the life of our softwood sleepers Nelson Potter recommend you use a D P M liner to act as a waterproof barrier.

Nelson Potter also sell oak sleepers and 150x 22 mm or 200 mm x 50 mm gravel boards (also great for raised beds), which can be cut with a handsaw and the cut sections re-sealed with two coats of good preservative.
